The vivid red flowers are irresistible to hummingbirds and provide one of the best native hummingbird plants for xeric, alkaline-soil gardens. It is extremely drought and heat tolerant, thriving in the conditions that defeat most flowering perennials in the hot, dry Southwest. The felted, gray-green leaves provide attractive texture even between bloom cycles. Self-sows freely in appropriate, well-drained conditions to naturalize. Outstanding in native plant gardens, xeric landscapes, and rock gardens in zone 7–11.
