Scatter seed on the surface of average, well-drained soil in full sun; tall goldenrod is the single most important plant for migrating monarch butterflies and late-season native bees, providing nectar during the critical fall migration period. Despite its reputation for causing hay fever (the actual culprit is ragweed, which blooms simultaneously), goldenrod pollen is heavy and insect-pollinated, not airborne. The plant spreads aggressively by rhizome in fertile soil; divide every 2–3 years to maintain vigor, using divisions to fill new areas. Excellent companion for ironweed (Vernonia), asters, and Joe-Pye weed in a late-season native garden.
