Plant in well-drained, average to poor soil in full sun; society garlic is a South African native perfectly adapted to Gulf Coast heat and drought, producing strappy blue-green foliage and clusters of lavender-pink flowers almost continuously from spring through fall. Despite the name, it lacks the offensive breath component of garlic while retaining a mild garlic flavor — the leaves, flowers, and bulbs are all edible and used in salads, stir-fries, and as a cooked vegetable in South African cuisine. It is a superb low-maintenance edging plant for sunny borders, extremely tolerant of heat, reflected heat, poor soil, and dry conditions once established. Deer and rabbits avoid it completely. Divide congested clumps every 3–4 years in spring.
