Опис

Direct sow seed in fall in moist, well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil in partial shade; Alexanders (Smyrnium olusatrum) is a biennial or short-lived perennial umbelifer that was the primary culinary celery-substitute of the ancient Roman and medieval European kitchen — widely grown across the Mediterranean and northern Europe until celery (Apium graveolens) displaced it in the 17th century. Every part of the plant is edible: young spring shoots and leaves have an intense celery-parsley-lovage flavor used as a pot herb; young flower stems are blanched and eaten like asparagus; the unripe seeds are used as a black pepper substitute; and the roots were boiled as a vegetable. It grows naturally in coastal habitats and hedgerows in partial shade and tolerates maritime conditions well. A fascinating kitchen garden curio for the historically minded cook and a productive addition to the permaculture herb garden — once established it self-sows reliably to maintain a permanent colony. Спосіб посадки: Посів у відкритий ґрунт Відстань між рослинами: 12–18 дюймів Висота: 24–48 дюймів Дні до схожості: 21–42 Температура ґрунту для схожості: 10–18°C

In zones 8–9 it performs best in the cooler months; the plant may struggle with summer heat in its second year.
