Sow cold-stratified seed or plant transplants in deep, well-drained, preferably rocky or clay loam soil in full sun; this long-lived prairie plant grows a massive, 6-foot-deep taproot that anchors it against drought and enables it to survive prairie fire. The basal rosette of enormous, rough-textured heart-shaped leaves — up to 18 inches across — is distinctive all season, while the wiry branched stems carry yellow composite flowers to 8 feet in mid- to late summer. It is extremely slow to establish, requiring 3–4 years to first bloom, but once rooted it is virtually indestructible and may live for decades. Do not transplant established plants as the taproot cannot be severed without killing the plant.
