Опис
Sow seed in fall in dry to moist, slightly acidic, well-drained, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade — hairy skullcap is a native Scutellaria of eastern deciduous woodland, producing terminal clusters of blue-violet, 3/4-inch, two-lipped flowers on hairy stems 6–16 inches tall from late spring through early summer. The genus name comes from the small, helmet-shaped (scutellum) protrusion on the upper side of the calyx visible in fruit. Native bumblebees are the primary pollinators. Hairy skullcap grows naturally in dry to moist hardwood forest understories from New York south to Florida and west to the Midwest — one of the more shade-tolerant and drought-tolerant native skullcaps, able to perform in the challenging dry-shade conditions under mature deciduous trees. The basal and stem leaves are opposite and elliptic, distinctly hairy. An attractive and ecologically valuable small native for the shaded wildflower garden and native plant border.
