Scatter seed lightly on the soil surface after last frost in well-drained, average to poor soil in full sun; this Gulf Coast native thrives in heat and drought where cultivated salvias fail, and it self-sows so freely in zone 9 that it naturalizes into a permanent colony. The brilliant red flower spikes bloom from spring through first frost and are irresistible to ruby-throated hummingbirds; white-flowering varieties attract additional butterfly species. Deadhead lightly to prolong bloom, but allow some seed to set for naturalization. It tolerates poor, sandy soil and partial shade better than many salvias, making it ideal for difficult spots in a Gulf Coast landscape.
