Опис
Plant in moist, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained to moderately wet soil in partial shade to full sun; red bay is the native American aromatic bay of the coastal Southeast and Gulf Coast, producing glossy, lance-shaped, dark-green leaves with the same aromatic oils and culinary bay-laurel fragrance as the Mediterranean bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) — the leaves are used identically in Southern cooking for seasoning gumbos, soups, stews, and bean dishes. In fact, red bay has traditionally been used in Gulf Coast cuisine (particularly in Louisiana) for generations as the local bay leaf. It is a fast-growing native tree of coastal hammocks and stream margins that provides excellent wildlife value — the blue-black fruits are important food for migrating songbirds, and the palamedes swallowtail butterfly uses red bay as its exclusive larval host plant. Tragically, laurel wilt disease (spread by an invasive ambrosia beetle) has killed the vast majority of red bay trees throughout the Southeast — consult local extension services before planting.

Plant container-grown trees in fall or spring in moist, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained to moist soil in partial shade to full sun; red bay grows naturally in moist, sandy, coastal soils and bottomlands. Note: red bay is devastated by laurel wilt disease caused by the redbay ambrosia beetle (Xyleborus glabratus) throughout much of its native range — check local extension for current recommendations.
