Purple Giant Hyssop

Surface sow seed in moist, well-drained, average to slightly acidic soil in full sun to partial shade; purple giant hyssop is a tall, architecturally striking native mint family perennial of eastern woodland edges and clearings with lilac-purple flower spikes in midsummer to fall that are outstanding nectar sources for hummingbirds, sphinx moths, and a wide variety of native bees. The anise-scented foliage deters deer. It tolerates light shade well and performs better in partial shade in hot zone 7–8 summers than in full sun. Short-lived as a perennial but self-sows abundantly to maintain a naturalized colony; thin seedlings in spring. Excellent in native border plantings, prairie-edge gardens, and pollinator gardens.
