Plant in well-drained, moist, slightly acidic soil in full sun to partial shade; lemon myrtle is an Australian native rainforest tree with the most intensely concentrated lemon fragrance of any plant on Earth — the essential oil content of the leaves (95% citral) vastly exceeds that of lemon balm, lemon verbena, or lemon thyme. Fresh or dried leaves are used in cooking exactly as lemon is used, in teas, baked goods, sauces, marinades, ice cream, and fish dishes, with a clean, pure lemon flavor that holds up better to heat than actual lemon juice. It is increasingly popular as a culinary specialty herb in Zone 9–11 gardens in the US, particularly in coastal California and the Gulf Coast. The shiny, oval, evergreen leaves are attractive year-round, and small clusters of white flowers appear in summer. It makes an excellent large container specimen in colder zones that can be moved to protection before frost. Harvest leaves fresh as needed or dry for long-term use.
