Maximilian's sunflower

This native perennial sunflower towers up to ten feet and lines its stems with golden-yellow blooms in late summer and fall. Sow seed outdoors in fall or cold-stratify before spring planting, and give it full sun with room to spread since it forms robust colonies. It is drought tolerant once established and provides valuable late-season nectar and seed for pollinators and birds. Cut back or divide clumps periodically to keep the vigorous spread in check.
