Опис
Direct sow after last frost in well-drained, sandy to loamy, dry soil in full sun — beach sunflower is a fast-growing, sprawling native annual of Gulf Coast beaches, dunes, sandy roadsides, and open flatwoods, producing cheerful, 2–3 inch yellow sunflowers with dark centers from early summer through frost on prostrate, branching stems that spread to cover large areas with a carpet of flowers. In zone 9–11 it blooms nearly year-round in sunny open spots. Unlike most sunflowers, this species is extremely heat and salt tolerant, thriving in sandy, nutritionally poor soils and handling reflected heat from pavement and buildings without complaint. It is an outstanding, zero-irrigation wildflower for difficult dry, sunny, sandy sites in the coastal South — slopes, parking lot edges, dry medians, and hot foundation exposures. Self-sows prolifically to maintain a persistent colony. The seeds are an excellent food source for goldfinches and sparrows in winter.
