Allspice (Jamaica Pepper)

Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun to partial shade — allspice is a tropical Caribbean tree native to Jamaica and Central America, the source of the spice whose dried unripe berries combine the flavors of cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a single berry (hence 'allspice'). The large, glossy, aromatic leaves also contain significant allspice flavor (used to wrap jerk meats in Jamaica). The tree is medium-sized (30–40 feet at maturity) with attractive smooth, exfoliating bark and fragrant white flowers. Allspice is a dioecious tree — both male and female plants are needed for fruit production, though the leaves of either sex can be harvested for culinary use. In South Florida it grows well outdoors in zone 10–11; in zone 9 it requires a container that can be moved to frost protection.
