Surface sow seed or plant divisions in moist, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade; white snakeroot fills a critical niche as a shade-tolerant late-season bloomer, producing clouds of white fluffy flowers from August through October when pollinators most need late-season forage in shaded areas. It naturalizes freely by self-seeding under trees where few other plants bloom in fall. Note that all parts of the plant are toxic to livestock and humans — the toxin tremetol accumulates in milk of cows that graze on it, historically causing 'milk sickness' in settlers. Do not plant near pastures or where children might graze on it; it is safe as an ornamental in a garden setting.
