Plant in well-drained, rocky to loamy, alkaline to neutral, dry soil in full sun to light shade — zexmenia is a tough, sprawling Texas native perennial that produces cheerful, bright orange-yellow daisy-like flowers nearly continuously from spring through frost in zone 8–9, and virtually year-round in zone 10–11. The rough, hairy leaves and stems give it a slightly weedy texture that suits naturalistic plantings, wildlife gardens, and dry slopes; in borders it benefits from cutting back by one-half in late spring to keep it compact and floriferous. It spreads slowly by both rhizome and self-sowing to form a modest groundcover in dry conditions. Outstanding for wildlife: the flowers are rich in nectar for monarch butterflies, skippers, and native bees.
