Yellow Mandarin

Yellow Mandarin is an elegant native woodland perennial, native to rich, moist, deciduous forests of eastern North America from Ontario south to Georgia and Alabama, with arching stems bearing alternating, broadly oval, clasping leaves and pendant, creamy-yellow, bell-shaped flowers dangling from branch tips in April and May — an effect reminiscent of Solomon's seal but with larger, more distinctly yellow-green flowers. The small, red to orange berries that follow in late summer are attractive and eaten by some birds, adding late-season interest to the shaded garden. Yellow Mandarin spreads slowly by rhizome to form loose, graceful colonies and is one of the most architecturally pleasing of the native spring woodland wildflowers, providing strong vertical structure in layers under taller shade trees. Divide clumps in fall, or plant nursery transplants in spring in well-amended, consistently moist, humus-rich soil.
