Yellow anise tree is a rare Florida native evergreen shrub endemic to the Ocala National Forest and surrounding central Florida scrub and flatwoods, closely related to Florida anise (Illicium floridanum) but producing small, inconspicuous yellow flowers rather than red ones — its primary appeal is its dense, lustrous evergreen foliage and exceptional shade tolerance that make it one of the finest screening shrubs for difficult deep-shade sites in Gulf Coast landscapes. All parts of the plant contain toxic compounds similar to true star anise (Illicium verum) and emit a strong, pleasant anise-like fragrance when crushed, making deer browsing rare — an excellent choice where deer pressure limits other evergreen shrubs.
