Scarify and direct sow in fertile to average, moist to well-drained soil in full sun; wild senna is a bold-textured native perennial with large, compound leaves and bright yellow flowers in midsummer that are structurally perfect for specialist bumblebee species that sonicate (buzz-pollinate) the flowers to release pollen. It is also the larval host plant for cloudless sulphur and sleepy orange butterflies. The persistent seed pods provide food for birds through winter. Cut back to the ground in late fall or early spring; the plant regrows vigorously from the crown each year. Develops a substantial taproot and is difficult to transplant once established; select your site carefully.
