Wild Olive (American Osmanthus)

Plant in moist, slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; wild olive is the native North American member of the same genus as the prized Asian fragrant sweet olive (O. fragrans), and though its white flowers in late spring are smaller and less flamboyant, they carry a delicate, sweet fragrance and are borne abundantly on large shrubs or small trees in woodland settings. It grows naturally in moist, shaded coastal plain forests and ravine forests of the Southeast, making it well-suited to garden use under tall trees where it provides refined, glossy-leaved evergreen structure year-round. The small, dark blue berry-like drupes ripen in fall and provide wildlife food. Slow growing but extremely long-lived; excellent as a foundation shrub or informal hedge in shade.
