White Wild Indigo

Direct sow in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun; white wild indigo grows more slowly than the more common blue Baptisia australis but is better adapted to the drier, hotter conditions of the southern Great Plains and Southeast. The white flower spikes appear in early summer, followed by inflated black seed pods that rattle in the wind and provide winter interest. Like all Baptisia species it develops a large, deep taproot that makes transplanting of established plants impossible; site it carefully and leave it undisturbed once established. It is a larval host plant for wild indigo duskywing and Zarucco duskywing butterflies. Fixes atmospheric nitrogen.
