Опис
Plant in wet to seasonally flooded, slightly acidic to neutral, clay to loamy bottomland soil in full sun to partial shade — water tupelo is one of the dominant trees of the Deep South's most iconic wetland ecosystems: the cypress-tupelo swamp. It develops a dramatically buttressed, swollen trunk base that allows gas exchange during prolonged flooding, standing in water for months at a time in the bottomlands of the Gulf Coast and Mississippi River corridor. The large, elliptic leaves turn brilliant orange, scarlet, and crimson in fall, making it one of the finest fall-color trees for wet sites. Clusters of small, oblong, dark blue to black fruit in late summer and fall are among the most sought by migrating birds. Water tupelo honey — gathered by bees from the small spring flowers — is renowned as a premium monofloral honey with an exceptionally delicate, fruity sweetness and crystallization-resistant properties. An outstanding large tree for naturalizing in wet, swampy, or bottomland areas.

Plant container specimens in spring in wet to flooded, slightly acidic to neutral, clay to loamy soil in full sun to partial shade; water tupelo is one of the very few large trees that tolerates prolonged seasonal flooding of 6–12 feet and thrives in swamp, bottomland, and floodplain conditions inaccessible to most trees.
