Опис
Water Locust is the swamp-adapted cousin of Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos), native to the permanently flooded bottomlands, river swamps, and slough edges of the southeastern and south-central United States from South Carolina and Florida west to Illinois and Texas, where it tolerates standing water for extended periods that most other large trees cannot survive. Like Honey Locust it bears formidable branched thorns on the trunk and branches, but the seed pods are shorter and usually contain only one or two seeds rather than the many seeds in Honey Locust's long pods. The flat seed pods that fall into floodwater are buoyant and dispersed by currents, making Water Locust an effective natural colonizer of new bottomland habitats after flooding. A valuable riparian restoration tree for wet, bottomland habitats in zones 5–9, providing large tree structure in permanently flooded sites where bald cypress, water tupelo, and swamp cottonwood grow as associates. Plant in full sun in wet, rich, slightly acidic alluvial soil.

Час посадки: 0–4 тижнів spring
Scarify seeds and plant nursery transplants in spring in wet to moist, slightly acidic to neutral, deep alluvial or clay-loam soil in full sun. Water Locust tolerates prolonged flooding and is an excellent native tree for the most difficult, permanently wet bottomland sites where other large trees fail.
