Egyptian Walking Onion (Tree Onion)

Plant aerial bulblets 1–2 inches deep in fall in any well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade; Egyptian walking onion is a perennial onion cross that 'walks' itself across the garden by producing clusters of small bulblets at the top of its flowering stalks — when the bulblets become heavy enough, the stalk bends to the ground and the bulblets root where they touch soil, establishing a new cluster a foot away. The entire plant is edible year-round: the underground bulbs are used like small onions, the hollow green tops are used like green onions or chives, and the aerial bulblets are pickled or used as pearl onions. Varieties with particularly fine bulblet clusters and flavor include 'Zebrune' and 'Catawissa'. Essentially zero-maintenance once established — just harvest and leave the rest to multiply.
