Start tubers hollow-side up in barely moist peat, then transplant to shaded containers or beds in humus-rich, well-drained soil; tuberous begonias produce enormous, rose-like flowers 3–6 inches across in an unrivaled range of colors and forms — single, double, ruffled, picotee, and pendulous types in red, orange, yellow, pink, white, and bicolor — making them among the most spectacular of all shade-garden plants. They thrive in cool, bright indirect light and perform best in containers on covered porches or under light-filtering trees where afternoon temperatures stay below 85°F. Reduce watering in late summer as plants prepare for dormancy; lift and store tubers dry when foliage yellows. In zone 9–11 tubers may remain in the ground with very light mulch through mild winters.
