Plant tubers 2 inches deep in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun; tuberose is one of the most intensely fragrant flowers in the world — the pure white, waxy flowers on tall spikes in late summer have a heavy, sweet, complex scent that intensifies at night and has been prized for centuries in perfumery and garlands. It is the principal flower in traditional South Asian garlands and is widely used in the Indian perfume industry (the absolute is one of the most expensive floral extracts). The single-flowered variety blooms slightly earlier than the double; 'The Pearl' is the most widely grown double-flowered cultivar. In zone 9–11 the clumping tubers naturalize to form large colonies that bloom reliably each summer; in colder zones dig and store tubers dry through winter.
