Опис
Vasey's Trillium is one of the largest and most striking of the native eastern trilliums, native to rich, moist cove forests and sheltered ravines of the southern Appalachians from Virginia and North Carolina south to Georgia and Alabama, where it blooms from April through May with dramatic, deep wine-red petals that recurve strongly back toward the stem, hanging below the leaves and emitting a strong, sweet fragrance to attract fly pollinators. It grows markedly larger than most sessile trilliums, with broad three-parted leaves and stems reaching 24 inches, and its flowers hang on a distinct pedicel below the leaf whorl — a characteristic setting it apart from sessile species. Plant nursery-propagated rhizome divisions in fall in the deepest, most richly amended soil you can provide — cove forest conditions with high organic matter, consistent moisture, and full shade — and mulch heavily with leaf litter. Vasey's Trillium takes 5–7 years to reach blooming age from seed, making nursery divisions the only practical route for most gardeners.

Plant nursery-propagated rhizome divisions in fall in deep, moist, rich, slightly acidic soil in partial to full shade in a woodland garden setting. Vasey's Trillium is a large pedicellate species that blooms somewhat later than sessile trilliums — April to May in the Southern Appalachians.
