Underwood's Trillium

Underwood's Trillium is a southeastern sessile trillium native to the moist, mixed hardwood forests of the Florida panhandle, Georgia, and Alabama, where it blooms in February through April with dark maroon to nearly black sessile flowers nestled among three strongly mottled, glossy leaves. It occupies an ecological niche similar to other coastal plain sessile trilliums but tolerates somewhat warmer and more humid conditions than its montane relatives, making it an appropriate choice for gardeners in zones 7–9 seeking native spring woodland plants. Obtain only nursery-propagated plants, as wild collection is destructive and in many areas illegal; plant rhizome divisions in fall in well-amended, moist, acidic soil in the shade of evergreen or deciduous trees. Like all trilliums, it blooms for only a few weeks before going dormant, so interplant with later-emerging shade perennials to fill the gap.
