Опис
Rugel's Trillium is a rare and distinctive pedicellate trillium native to a limited area in the southern Appalachians of Tennessee, North Carolina, and northern Georgia, where it grows in moist, rich hardwood forest coves and sheltered slopes and blooms in April with three white petals that reflex so strongly backward that they resemble a swept-back cap — an appearance unlike any other eastern trillium. The flower hangs on a short pedicel below the leaf whorl, facing downward and sometimes hidden beneath the foliage, and carries a faint fragrance that attracts small fly pollinators. Listed as a species of conservation concern in several states, Rugel's Trillium should never be collected from wild populations; source only from specialty native plant nurseries propagating their own rhizome divisions. Grow in deep, consistently moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil in full shade, mulch generously with leaf litter, and allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally by summer.

Plant nursery-propagated rhizome divisions in fall in moist, humus-rich, acidic to neutral woodland soil in partial to full shade. Rugel's Trillium is a pedicellate species with strongly reflexed white petals that create a nodding appearance distinct from most other trilliums.
