Опис
Plant in well-drained, alkaline to neutral soil in full sun; Texas olive is one of the most spectacular native flowering trees of the Rio Grande Plains and an outstanding ornamental for zone 8–11 gardens. The large, tropical-looking leathery leaves and stunning pure white, 2-inch funnel-shaped flowers with a yellow throat are produced year-round in warm weather, attracting bees, butterflies, and birds. The olive-like fruits ripen to white and are eaten by mockingbirds and other wildlife. The tree is semi-evergreen, holding its large velvety leaves in mild winters and dropping them only in cold or drought. It is highly drought tolerant once established and grows naturally on rocky limestone slopes, chaparral, and thorny brush country of the Rio Grande Plains. In zone 8a it may be killed to the ground in severe winters but resprouting from roots is common.

Plant container-grown trees in spring in very well-drained, alkaline to neutral, lean to moderately fertile soil in full sun; Texas olive is native to extreme south Texas and northeastern Mexico and prefers alkaline, calcareous soils. It is tolerant of clay and caliche but requires excellent drainage and is damaged at 22–25°F.
