Texas Mountain Laurel (Mescal Bean)

Plant in alkaline to neutral, rocky or caliche, sharply drained soil in full sun; this aristocratic native evergreen shrub of the Texas Hill Country and desert Southwest is prized for its intensely fragrant violet-purple flower clusters that smell like Concord grape candy and appear in early spring. It is extremely slow-growing (6–12 inches per year), drought tolerant once established, and virtually pest and disease free. The distinctive woody seed pods contain bright red seeds that are highly toxic if eaten. Give it an excellent drainage and poor alkaline soil — rich, moist conditions cause root rot. An excellent foundation or specimen plant for Gulf Coast and zone 8–9 gardens where winter temperatures stay above 10°F.
