Опис
Tawnyberry Holly is a native evergreen holly tree of the Florida Keys, Miami-Dade rockland hammocks, and Caribbean islands, producing small clusters of tawny-orange to reddish-black berries that are eagerly consumed by white-crowned pigeons, mockingbirds, and other fruit-eating birds in the subtropical forests of southernmost Florida. Growing as a slender understory tree to small specimen tree in the hammock community, Tawnyberry Holly has glossy, dark green evergreen leaves and small, inconspicuous white flowers in spring. An important component of the rare Florida Keys and Miami-Dade pine rockland hammock community — one of the most imperiled plant communities in the United States — this species deserves wider cultivation as an ornamental holly in frost-free south Florida landscapes. Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral, humus-rich soil in partial shade to full sun in Zone 10–11; both male and female plants are needed for berry production.
