Опис
Tall ironweed earns its name — plants commonly reach 8 to 10 feet in moist bottomland meadows and woodland edges, bearing brilliant magenta-purple, flat-topped flower clusters in late summer and early fall that stand above neighboring prairie plants and attract a spectacular diversity of butterflies and native bees. As one of the tallest native perennials in the eastern United States, it provides a dramatic vertical accent in native gardens, meadows, and rain garden margins where few other plants achieve its scale while remaining fully native. The intense royal purple flowers are among the most vivid of any North American wildflower — the color is caused by anthocyanin pigments and does not fade even in full southern sun. Cut plants back by half in late June to reduce height and encourage branching if growing in a formal border; allow spent flower heads to stand through winter to feed goldfinches and sparrows.

Direct sow in fall for natural cold stratification, or sow indoors 8 weeks before last frost; transplant in spring after frost risk passes — tall ironweed self-seeds freely in moist meadows and stream margins.
