Sweet coneflower is one of the most fragrant of all native coneflowers — the flowers emit a noticeable sweet, anise-like scent, particularly on warm afternoons — and is native to moist to dry prairies, savannas, and open woodlands of the central United States from Texas to Illinois. Its 2-foot-wide clumps of deeply textured, softly hairy leaves (the 'subtomentosa' refers to the downy leaf texture) support multiple branched stems bearing dozens of cheerful gold-petaled flowers with dark brown central cones from July through September. A popular parent of many prairie garden cultivars, sweet coneflower is valued by horticulturists for its outstanding heat tolerance, mildew resistance (unlike many Rudbeckia species in humid southern climates), and adaptability from clay to sand soils. The seed heads remain ornamental through winter and feed goldfinches, chickadees, and sparrows; pair with prairie grasses and ironweeds for a dramatic native meadow planting.

Direct sow in fall in average to slightly moist, well-drained soil in full to partial sun; sweet coneflower adapts to a wide range of soil types and moisture levels and self-seeds moderately, forming clumps that should be divided every 3–4 years.
