Опис
Swamp Privet is a large, multi-stemmed native deciduous shrub, native to the riverine swamps, oxbow lakes, backwater floodplains, and cypress-tupelo swamps of the southeastern and mid-South United States from South Carolina to Florida and west to Kansas and Texas, tolerating prolonged inundation that few other native shrubs can survive. Inconspicuous yellow flowers appear in February and March before the leaves emerge, providing critical early-season nectar and pollen for native bees emerging from winter dormancy; small, dark blue-purple olive-like drupes ripen in summer and are avidly consumed by wood ducks, mallards, and other water-dependent birds. A valuable plant for the restoration and naturalization of wet bottomland and floodplain habitats, Swamp Privet tolerates prolonged flooding up to 4–6 months and is one of the few native shrubs that can establish in true swamp conditions. Plant male and female individuals together for fruit production; it requires no maintenance once established.
