Swamp Lily (String Lily)

Plant large bulbs with the neck at or just above soil level in consistently wet to moist, slightly acidic soil in partial shade; swamp lily is a stunning native bulb of the Gulf Coast, Florida, and Caribbean, growing naturally in freshwater swamps, bog margins, stream banks, and wet ditches. It produces large, fragrant, spider-like white flowers with narrow strap petals in summer and into fall — often repeatedly after summer rain events — on upright stalks among bold, strap-like evergreen leaves. Plant at pond margins, in consistently moist rain garden hollows, or in large containers kept in saucers of water on the patio. The bold foliage and exotic flowers provide a tropical look in Gulf Coast zone 8–9 gardens. Divide crowded clumps every 4–5 years by removing and replanting offsets.
