Swamp Fern

Swamp Fern is an aggressive, colony-forming native fern of the Gulf Coast and peninsular Florida, native to wet flatwoods, swamp margins, cypress sloughs, seepage slopes, and roadside ditches from Florida west to Texas, and throughout the Caribbean and tropical Americas, where it thrives in warm, wet, acidic conditions that few other ferns tolerate. The upright, glossy fronds — both sterile (wider, with toothed pinnae) and fertile (narrower, with elongated sori) — are produced from creeping stolons that spread widely in saturated or permanently moist soil, forming dense colonies that effectively suppress weeds and stabilize wet soil. An excellent low-maintenance groundcover for the permanently wet spots in Gulf Coast landscapes where most ornamental plants drown; it is fully evergreen in zones 9–11 and semi-evergreen in zone 8. Divide and replant in spring in any moist, acidic, low-lying area.
