Swamp Doghobble is a graceful native deciduous shrub of moist to wet, shaded, acidic habitats along shaded stream banks, boggy swamp margins, and wet woodland understories of the eastern United States, producing fragrant, white, cylindrical flowers in drooping clusters along the stems in spring before the leaves fully emerge. Unlike the evergreen leucothoes, Swamp Doghobble is deciduous and displays outstanding orange, red, and purple fall foliage color that rivals the showiest cultivated shrubs. The arching, fountain-like growth habit and multi-season ornamental interest — spring flowers, attractive summer foliage, and brilliant fall color — make Swamp Doghobble a highly desirable native shrub for shaded, moist, acid garden settings. Plant in strongly acidic, moist to wet, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade; Swamp Doghobble will not tolerate alkaline soil, drought, or prolonged direct sun.
