Опис
Swamp Cottonwood is the wetland specialist of the cottonwood family, native to the permanently flooded swamps, blackwater river bottoms, and cypress-tupelo swamp margins of the southeastern coastal plain from Connecticut to Florida and west to Indiana and Oklahoma, where it tolerates deeper and more prolonged flooding than any other native cottonwood. Its leaves are distinctly broader and more rounded than those of Eastern Cottonwood (Populus deltoides) — hence the species epithet heterophylla (variable-leaved) — and the tree often develops a tall, straight trunk in the competitive light environment of bottomland forest. Like other cottonwoods, Swamp Cottonwood is a fast-growing pioneer tree important for rapid canopy establishment in wetland restoration projects; it roots readily from hardwood cuttings pushed into wet soil in early spring. The cottony seeds of female trees are dispersed by wind and water in late spring and early summer. An excellent riparian tree for the restoration and naturalization of permanently wet bottomland habitats in zones 5–9.

Plant nursery transplants or root hardwood cuttings in spring in wet, moist, slightly acidic to neutral, rich alluvial or clay-loam soil in full sun. Swamp Cottonwood thrives in the deepest, most permanently wet bottomland soils where Eastern Cottonwood (Populus deltoides) begins to struggle.
