Опис
American Bladdernut is a large, multi-stemmed native shrub, native to moist, rich deciduous forest understories, streambanks, and floodplain edges throughout eastern North America from Quebec to Florida and west to Kansas, forming thickets in the shade of oaks, maples, and ashes where few other ornamental shrubs survive. In April and May it produces drooping clusters of small, white, bell-shaped flowers attractive to native bees; these are followed in summer by the plant's most distinctive feature — inflated, papery, three-chambered seed pods resembling small green Chinese lanterns that persist into fall and rattle audibly in the breeze, turning tan and remaining decorative into winter. The opposite, trifoliate leaves resemble those of box elder and turn yellow in fall. An underutilized native shrub for difficult shaded, moist sites — excellent for naturalizing under large trees where maintaining lawn is impossible.
