Опис

Spruce Pine is the most ecologically unusual of the southeastern native pines — the only pine in eastern North America that regularly grows as an understory component of bottomland hardwood forests and shaded mixed woods, native to the coastal plain and lower Piedmont from South Carolina to northern Florida and west to Louisiana, where it occurs in moist, fertile, loamy soils in the shade of sweetgum, water oak, and magnolia rather than in the open pinelands where other southeastern pines grow. Its smooth, gray bark (glabra means smooth or glabrous) is distinctive among pines and gives the tree an appearance reminiscent of a smooth-barked hardwood; the short, clustered needles and small cones distinguish it from other southeastern species. A valuable native pine for moist, shaded woodland gardens and naturalistic landscapes in zones 7–9 where its unusual shade tolerance sets it apart from all other native conifers. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic loamy soil in partial shade to full sun; it is not drought-tolerant and requires consistently moist conditions. Спосіб посадки: Висадка розсади Відстань між рослинами: 300–480 дюймів Висота: 480–960 дюймів Дні до схожості: 7–21 Температура ґрунту для схожості: 16–21°C

Spruce Pine is ecologically unique among eastern pines in its ability to establish and grow in the partial shade of mixed hardwood forests — the only pine native to the Southeast that tolerates significant shade.
