Spider Plant (Airplane Plant)

Root spiderette plantlets in water or moist soil and plant in any moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in partial to deep shade — spider plant is one of the world's most popular houseplants and a valuable outdoor shade groundcover in tropical and subtropical gardens, producing fountains of long, arching, strap-like leaves (solid green or with bold cream-white centers or margins) and long, arching stolons tipped with miniature plantlets that root wherever they contact moist soil. In zone 9b–11 it grows as a naturalized groundcover in deep shade under trees, producing a lush carpet that requires almost no care. It tolerates deep shade, inconsistent watering, and low soil fertility better than almost any other shade groundcover. The variegated form (cream-and-green striped) is especially bright in dark shade. NASA studies identified spider plant as one of the most effective air-purifying houseplants, removing formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds from indoor air.
