Spanish Stopper is an attractive evergreen native shrub or small tree, native to the coastal hammocks, scrub, and pinelands of south Florida and the Florida Keys, with a natural range extending through the Caribbean and tropical Americas. Small, oval, aromatic, dark green leaves densely clothe the branches and produce a thick, fine-textured screen when planted as a hedge; clusters of small white flowers in summer are followed by round black berries that are avidly consumed by mockingbirds, robins, and waxwings. Highly adaptable to a range of coastal conditions including salt spray, drought, and partial shade, Spanish Stopper is an excellent foundation plant, hedge, or specimen for south Florida and Gulf Coast landscapes in zones 9b–11. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade; established plants require little care and tolerate periodic drought with minimal stress.
