Spanish Bayonet (Aloe Yucca)

Mature plants are truly striking landscape specimens. Enormous panicles of white, pendulous, edible flowers appear in spring-summer; the large, fleshy fruit capsules and flowers are both edible and were important food sources for Native Americans. Plant well away from foot traffic areas — the razor-sharp leaf tips are a serious safety hazard. Extraordinary drought, salt spray, and wind tolerance makes it one of the best structural plants for coastal, dune, and xeriscape landscapes. Deer-proof, essentially pest-free, and immortal in adapted sandy soils.
