Опис
Southern spiderwort is a shade-tolerant native Tradescantia of the moist, rich, rocky slopes and ravines of the Appalachian foothills and Ozarks to the Gulf Coastal Plain — the species name 'subaspera' means 'somewhat rough,' referring to the slightly hairy stems and leaves that distinguish it from the smooth Ohio spiderwort. Like other spiderworts, it produces vivid three-petaled flowers of brilliant blue-violet with bright yellow stamens that open in the morning and close by midday, continuing to produce new flowers throughout a long season from late spring through summer; each flower lasts only a few hours but the plant produces dozens in succession. It grows well in the partial to moderate shade of mature deciduous trees and is one of the few genuinely shade-tolerant native wildflowers with a long bloom season — most shade perennials bloom only briefly in spring. The clumping habit and bold, strap-like leaves provide attractive foliage interest even when not in flower; divide clumps every 2–3 years in fall to maintain vigor.

Plant divisions or transplants in fall or early spring in moist, humus-rich, well-drained to moderately moist soil in partial to full shade; southern spiderwort naturalizes freely in shaded gardens by self-seeding and division of the fibrous root clumps.
