Опис
Southern Red Cedar is the coastal plain and Gulf Coast counterpart to Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana), native to the sandy soils, coastal hammocks, maritime forests, and barrier islands from North Carolina through Florida and around the Gulf Coast to Texas, where it is distinguished from J. virginiana by its more pendulous (weeping) branch tips and overall softer appearance. Salt spray-tolerant, drought-tolerant, and adapted to the sandy, low-nutrient soils of the coastal plain, Southern Red Cedar is an excellent native windbreak, privacy screen, and wildlife tree for Gulf Coast landscapes in zones 7–11. Like Eastern Red Cedar, it produces fleshy blue-green berries (technically seed cones) that are consumed by dozens of bird species including cedar waxwings and bluebirds, and provides dense, year-round nesting cover; plant male and female trees together for consistent berry production. Grow in full sun in any well-drained soil; it is notably more heat-tolerant than Eastern Red Cedar and performs better in the lower South and in coastal situations.
