Опис
Direct sow in fall or plant divisions in spring in dry to moderately moist, slightly acidic to neutral soil in partial to full shade — spiked wood oats is a fine-textured native grass of the southeastern and south-central US, closely related to inland sea oats (C. latifolium) but notably more drought and shade tolerant and somewhat smaller and narrower in leaf. It grows naturally in dry, rocky, or sandy woodland soils under hardwood forest canopies and along dry bluffs and ridges, where its minimal water requirements make it a standout among shade grasses. The attractive seed heads emerge in summer, erect rather than pendulous, and turn a warm tan by fall, providing winter interest and wildlife food. An excellent grass for filling dry shade under oaks and other trees where irrigation is unavailable, or for naturalizing in shaded woodland garden settings. Self-sows moderately; cut back to the ground in late winter to encourage fresh growth.

Direct sow seed in fall or divide clumps in spring; spiked wood oats is more shade and drought tolerant than the related inland sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium) and performs well in dry to moderately moist conditions in full to partial shade.
