Southern Meadow Rue (Leatherleaf Meadow Rue)

Plant in moist, slightly acidic to neutral, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade — southern meadow rue is a rare Appalachian native of moist, rich, shaded mountain woodlands and stream-bank forests in Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, producing the classic meadow-rue effect at an impressive scale: tall (3–6 foot) stems clothed in beautiful, blue-green, columbine-like compound leaves, topped in summer with loose, airy panicles of small white flowers with prominent stamens that create a soft, misty cloud-like effect above the foliage. The delicate, divided foliage is exceptionally ornamental throughout the season. It is one of the taller native shade perennials available, providing dramatic vertical interest in shaded borders, woodland gardens, and moist stream-bank plantings. At the northern edge of zone 8 in moist, deeply shaded, well-drained positions it can succeed, but it is most reliable in zone 4–7 woodland conditions.
