Southern Crabapple (Narrowleaf Crabapple)

Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral, moderately fertile soil in full sun to partial shade; southern crabapple is the native crabapple of the southeastern United States, producing a spectacular display of intensely fragrant pink flowers in early spring and small (1/2–1 inch) yellow-green to red crabapples in late summer and fall. The crabapples are too tart to eat fresh but make outstanding jelly, cider, and preserved fruit with excellent pectin content. The flowers are superb for native bees; cedar waxwings, mockingbirds, and deer consume the fruit through fall and winter. It tolerates the heat and humidity of zone 8–9 better than most crabapple cultivars and produces cleaner foliage with fewer disease problems in the warm South. A self-fertile tree, so only one is needed for fruit.
