Southern Blazingstar

Southern Blazingstar is a small, slender native perennial of the sandy, open longleaf pine savannas, flatwoods, and coastal plain prairies of the Gulf and South Atlantic states from Georgia to Louisiana, producing dense wand-like spikes of small pink-purple flower heads in early fall that attract monarch butterflies, skippers, and native bees during the critical fall migration period. Less showy than the larger Liatris species but ecologically significant in its native longleaf pine ecosystem, Southern Blazingstar is a component of the diverse herbaceous layer that characterizes intact coastal plain savannas. Direct sow fresh seeds in fall in sandy, infertile, acidic, well-drained soil in full sun; established corms are drought-tolerant and long-lived, forming tight clumps that slowly expand over time in appropriate open, sunny conditions.
