Sorghum-Sudangrass (Summer Cover Crop Sorghum)

Direct sow in warm soil (65°F minimum) in full sun after last frost; sorghum-sudangrass is the premier summer cover crop for the South and Gulf Coast, producing more biomass per day than any other cover crop in hot weather — 6–12 feet of lush growth that smothers weeds, suppresses nematodes, builds organic matter rapidly, and breaks up compacted soil with its fibrous root system. The allelopathic root exudates suppress germination of subsequent crops if incorporated when immature; allow residue to fully decompose before planting a following crop.
